Standing Ready is the work of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments, created to provide
Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson and Washington Counties and
area community members with a single place for answers to all questions about disasters, disaster preparedness and links to all
Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson and Washington Counties
A basic disaster kit and plan should be prepared and discussed by friends and/or family
members. The kit
should include supplies, recreational materials, meds, and a general plan of
action.
There are six rudimentary survival supplies you should stock in your home: water, food, first-aid supplies,
clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and special items. Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation
in an easy-to-carry container, such as a
large, covered plastic container; a camping backpack, a suitcase or a bag.
Entertainment, sports equipment, games and/or books/hobby
Important family documents: Bank account numbers, credit card account numbers and companies, family wills,
insurance policies, contracts, deeds, stocks and bonds, passports, Social Security cards, immunization records, inventory of valuable
household goods, important telephone numbers, and the like. Keep these records in a waterproof, portable container.
Medicine: Prescription drugs and a list of all medicines and prescription numbers. Other medical needs may
include denture supplies, contact lenses and supplies and eyeglasses. You should also prepare two first-aid kits, one for your home
and another for your car.
Plan in advance how your family will stay in contact if separated by disaster. Pick two meeting places and
include one outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home.
This seems like a lot of work, and it is. If you have never been through a disaster and lost everything in
your home, you may not realize how devastating it is. Taking these precautions now will help ease the pain if you ever have to piece
your life back together.
About Citizen Corps:
What is Citizen Corps?
Local Citizen Corps Councils are part of the USA Freedom Corps and have been established as the result of a presidential initiative after the September 11th tragedy. The purpose of forming local Citizen Corps Councils throughout Texas is to focus on opportunities for Texas to participate in a range of volunteer measures to make their families, homes, and communities safer from the threats of terrorism, crime, and disasters of all kinds.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program trains volunteers to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.
The Texas Association of Regional Councils, a public entity, administers the Citizen Corps and CERT programs in Texas through councils of governments (COGs).
